Half a century of carpets, on one Manhattan floor
Rugs On Net has been one family’s business since 1976, working from a single floor on East 31st Street. Fifty years of buying, studying and restoring carpets has put pieces from these collections into major museum exhibitions and the pages of leading design publications.
What we buy is decided by the weave. Wool arrives unprocessed, hand spun and high altitude, coloured with authentic natural dyes that soften with age instead of fading out of it. Age, rarity and condition set a rug’s price here, not fashion. Because we buy directly rather than through a chain of dealers, a hand knotted carpet costs what it should.
Restoration happens in house. The artisans who clean an 1880s Sultanabad are the same ones who reweave its selvedges and secure its ends, so a carpet that has already survived well over a century is ready for another lifetime. Antique, vintage, modern and new American hooked rugs all pass through those hands before they reach a floor.
The collection runs to six thousand carpets, from scatter size to oversized, in Persian, Turkish, Chinese, European, Moroccan and Indian weaves. Browse all of it online at any hour, or sit with the rugs themselves on East 31st Street by appointment. Designers, architects and dealers work with us on trade terms, with memo delivery, so a rug can be seen in the room and in its own light before anything is decided.
Seen in person, it is a different rug.
Private viewings weekdays on East 31st Street. Bring floor plans, fabric samples — or nothing at all.
